In 1990, the American professor Joseph Nye developed, in his book Bound to Lead: The Changing Nature of American Power, the idea of “soft power”. Used in the field of international relations, this concept describes the ability of a political actor to influence indirectly – by means of structural, cultural or ideological – and without coercion, the behaviour of other actors.
Twenty-five years later, Gail Dexter Lord -co-founder and co-president of Lord Cultural Resources– and Ngaire Blankenberg – senior consultant at Lord Cultural Resources -proposed an update of the concept of soft power, by operating in particular a displacement of its scope (Cities, Museums and Soft Power, The AAM Press, 2015). Fraud, money laundering, trafficking in cultural property, tax optimization, artificial increases of prices, confidentiality and anonymity… many dangerous hurdles, attributed to the art market, that for many elude to rules that have become an imperative necessity. Among the scandals involving diverse spheres of personalities and perplexed records in auction sales, we can equally cite a loss in standardisation and harmonization in the legal international disposals and especially the specificities of a lost market by subjectivity – justifying an irregularity and exaggeration of prices. Surveying the tribal art market from 2000 to 2015, a recently released Artkhade and Art Analytics report revealed exceptionally positive results for the category, documenting a growing trend towards multi-million-dollar auction sales and the increasing domination of the market by high-end works.
The study amassed a wide range of data to document tribal art’s growth as a sale category—though it still lags far behind the dominant Modern, Post-War, and Contemporary art segments of the market. Here, we have selected seven key figures from the report’s pages to explore what they tell us about the future of this “niche” market.
The tribal art market witnessed record sales in 2014, achieving €92.1 million from works sold at auction. Demonstrating the upward trajectory of the market, this result well surpassed the €52.8 million sold just one year previous, in 2013, never mind the €13.7 million of tribal art sold in 2001.

From 14 to 18 October 2015, PAD London is hosting its art fair in Berkerley Square, London.
The London art fair presents 20th Century art, design and decorative arts. International galleries from across Europe, North America and Asia will come together to offer a panorama of works available on the market today. The 14th edition of Parcours des mondes 2015, the international exhibition of primitive art that took place in Saint-Germain-des-Prés in Paris from 8 to 13 Sept 2015, was particularly successful for the Asian art it put forward this year.
Of the 84 exhibitors gathered in the show, about twenty specialized in Asian art, from Nepal, Japan, and China. The show was made up of thirty exhibitions of Asian, African, Native American and Oceanian works. The works from Lucas Ratton Gallery saw most of its works sold from day one. Among other successful sales, Dutchman Michel Thieme sold 60% of the pieces he presented, and American Donald Ellis made a sale of €1 million on the first day of the show, while museums reserved him Native American works. In regards to Asian art, Parisian gallery owner Christopher Hioco sold a particular Mucalinda Khmer Buddha in the style of Angkor Wat, dated from the twelfth century, posted at €65,000 and a Japanese Amida Nyorai wooden chest from the 12th-13th century, [.../...]See more

Launched by a handful of Parisian dealers in 2001, the Parcours des mondes has, in less than fifteen years, succeeded in attracting the most important tribal art dealers from France and the rest of the world, and has re-established Paris as the center of the tribal art world.
Widely recognized as the most important international tribal art fair, in terms of the number of visitors it brings in, the quality of the works shown, the level of the exhibitions, the publications produced in association with it, and the diversity of its participants, Parcours des mondes celebrates its 14th anniversary this year from Tuesday September 8th through Sunday September 13th in the heart of Paris.
Some fifty dealers from Europe, the Americas, Asia, Australia and other parts of France join their colleagues with permanent galleries in the Beaux-Arts of SaintGermain-des-Prés.

On 13 July 2015, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) in Colorado, United States, announced the nomination of Tianlong Jiao as curator of the Asian art department.
After ten years of experience working in various museums, Jiao is joining the DAM. He previously worked as chief curator at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum and also as Chairman of the Bishop Museum’s Anthropology department in Honolulu, Hawaii. Just before joining the DAM, Jiao worked at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, as curator of the Chinese art collection since September 2014. In the past, he has organised international travelling exhibitions which were hosted by museums including the National Palace Museum, in Taipei, Taiwan, and the Nanjing Museum, in China. Jérôme Bastianelli was appointed Managing Director of the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris, where he will take office beginning 13 July 2015.
Jérôme Bastianelli succeeds Mouttalib Karim, Deputy CEO of the Quai Branly Museum since 2009, this year named General Director of the Louvre Museum. He has occupied, since 2009, the functions of assistant Director General Deputy Delegate of the Quai Branly Museum, under Stéphane Martin’s presidency. Inaugurated in 2006, the museum of arts and civilizations of Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas, is one of the most visited museums in the world in its category, with around 1.5 million visitors a year.
A former student of the Ecole Polytechnique, Jérôme Bastianelli was posted in the Ministry of Transport from 1996 to 2006. He was also a reporter at the 7th Chamber of the Court of Auditors from 2006 to 2009, as well as the leader of the external audit United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Hélène Bayou, chief curator of the Japanese department at the Musée Guimet in Paris, France, recently put together an exhibition entitled “Japan, Images of Actors: 18th-Century Kabuki Prints”, which has been running from 15 April until 6 July this year, organised in parallel with a similar exhibition at the same museum: “From Nô to Mata Hari, 2000 years of Asian theatre”, which is running until 31 August 2015. Art Media Agency had the pleasure of talking to the fascinating and knowledgeable curator.
How did you come up with the idea to put on the current exhibition of Kabuki prints? Two years ago, together with the director president of the Musée Guimet Sophie Makariou, we came up with a project for the Japanese prints kept at the Musée Guimet that the Japanese section could carry out. The Rubin Museum of Art has announced the appointment of Risha Lee as curator of exhibitions from 1 July 2015.
Currently the assistant curator of South and Southeast Asian art at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Lee is known for her research on the confluence of politics and art on the South Asian region. In her new role, Lee will lead a multifaceted creative team to develop a forthcoming series of exhibitions, as well as collaborating with the curatorial staff at the Rubin for other exhibition projects. Rubin Museum’s Executive Director, Patrick Sears said of Lee’s appointment: “Risha’s energy, expertise, and leadership will help shape the exhibition program at the Rubin, connecting new audiences to the Himalayan region—and beyond, including India and China […] Her extensive research on the cross-cultural exchange of art, people, and ideas integrates well with our mission, and we’re thrilled she is joining our team.”
